Self Determination: Just Another Buzzword?

With Dr. Becky Eldridge, BCBA-D

Self Determination: Just Another Buzzword?

Self-determination may sound like a buzzword, but it’s central to our work as behavior analysts. It’s highlighted in the Ethics Code (BACB, 2020) and connects directly to socially significant goals (Baer, Wolf, & Risley, 1968). Put simply, self-determined individuals make things happen in their lives rather than letting things happen to them (Peterson et al., 2020).

In this presentation, one of the authors of Conceptualizing Self-determination from a Behavioral Perspective will trace the concept from Skinner’s analysis to modern practice, and share strategies for teaching self-determination skills in ABA services.
